Provigil or Modafinil is a drug that is used to promote wakefulness and is commonly used for the treatment of, shift work sleeping disorder, excessive sleepiness during the day, sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a disease that affects the spinal cord and the brain causing one to have a desire to sleep that is uncontrollable. Provigil works by reducing the nerves reuptake of a chemical known as dopamine (this is a neurotransmitter used by nerves for communication with each other) while increasing its amount in the brain. These are the conditions that the FDA has approved the drug to be used on.
Provigil has also been proven to be effective in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), although the FDA has found it unfit for children suffering from this disorder due to reports of skin rushes that was suspected to be Steven- Johnson syndrome or Erythema multiforme in 933 children who took the drug. Other areas where this drug has been found to be effective but not approved to treat are include; cocaine dependence, depression, opiate, Parkinson disease, bipolar depression and schizophrenia. Provigil has also been proven to have an appetite reducing effect on patients therefore causing weight loss and has also been used by athletes such as David Clinger a cyclist and Diana Taurasi a basketball player in the past as a performance enhancing drug.
Provigil should be taken exactly as the doctor recommends it to be taken and not in larger or even smaller doses. These drugs will usually be prescribed for a period of 12 weeks and taken mostly in the morning as a way of preventing sleeping during the day time or an hour before starting a work shift to avoid sleeping during work hours.
If a dose is missed take the medicine as soon as you remember, but if you are planning to go to sleep in a few hours’ time then you might need to skip the dose. The most import thing is to talk to your doctor on what to do when you skip a dose but remember not to take any extra medicine. If you accidentally overdose on the medicine the best thing to do is to seek immediate medical help if possible emergency help.
